Christians and Politics

The relationship between Christianity and politics is a historically complex subject and a frequent source of disagreement throughout Church history, and in modern politics between the Christian right and Christian left.

The Christian right within evangelical Christianity have formed many of their political views on social issues such as abortionhomosexuality and public education from passages in the Old Testament.

Gabriel Garnica wrote, “To be honest, I was tempted to begin this article with an extensive review of how the Left, fresh off being blind-sided by its 2004 election loss, has successfully developed, instituted and, now, institutionalized an effective take-over of the mantle of religious legitimacy in this country. Under cunning and deceptive labels such as so-called social justice and the common good, these extremist forces have managed to seize control of most major Catholic colleges; spread the false doctrine that war, poverty, the environment, abortion, and family issues are all morally equivalent; and largely position themselves as the face of Christianity in this country through sophisticated and aggressive public relations and marketing efforts as well as the gleeful assistance of a sympathetic, secular media. In the interest of brevity and respect for the extensive evidence of the above claims in the literature, I will focus on how the Christian Left’s silence in a few key instances speaks volumes regarding its true allegiance.”

“Typically, the so-called Christian Left presents itself as a defender and its opponents as the foes of the poor, women, families, the environment, and human rights. Typically, these people only recall Scriptural passages where Christ helps victims of society but conveniently get off the Scripture bus right before Jesus tells people not to sin and reminds them to repent from sin. Typically, these people present themselves as victims as well, assailed by the “hate” of others pretending that everyone who opposes their arguments spews vulgarities and condemns them to hell and asking how it is not hypocritical to shame, judge, and attack others in the name of Christ. I agree with them that only God can judge them and that it is wrong to attack them for their views. However, I was wondering if the Christian Left could explain a few things to me.”

“Although they present themselves as defenders of human rights and protectors of women, why have they been silent regarding the horrific human rights atrocities of China’s one child rule as exposed by Chen Guangcheng as well as being silent about the atrocities committed against women in Islamic honor killings all over the world? Is it not an interesting coincidence that the Christian Left’s positions in the above cases exactly mirror the position of the secular Left, but with a few well-placed references to the Bible here and Christ there?”

Could it be that the fact that Mr. Savage is a homosexual activist and extensively supported by the Left have anything to do with the Religious Left’s silence? How is it consistent to attack a Christian beauty pageant contestant for disagreeing with the homosexual lifestyle yet remain silent when an Islamic radical calls for the murder of homosexuals?”

“Finally, the Christian Left extensively cite Christ to justify their arguments and present themselves as faithful followers of Christ. Despite this, this group enthusiastically and proudly embraces a leader who makes light of his attacks on Christianity and asked that the symbol “IHS,” a monogram of the name Jesus Christ, be removed from sight when he spoke at Georgetown back in 2009. Could it be, once again, that the Christian Left is demonstrating more allegiance to the “Left” part of its name than to the “Christian” part?”

“Matthew 7:16 reminds us that ” By their fruits ye shall know them.” We live in a world which increasingly marginalize, mocks, ignores, and persecutes core Christian beliefs and even Christ Himself. The study of logic teaches us that fallacious arguments contradict themselves and fall of their own weight . The examples cited above point to a number of areas where the Religious Left’s self-identification as Christian clearly takes a back seat to its self-identification as supporting the agenda of the “Left.””

“If I call myself a vegetarian, but I eat meat when it suits me, am I a true vegetarian? Likewise, if I call myself a vegetarian, but I redefine “vegetarian” so I can eat meat when it suits me, am I a true vegetarian? If I am a vegetarian, but I honor someone who mocks vegetarians, what kind of vegetarian am I? Perhaps, in all of these cases, I am not really a vegetarian but someone who conveniently calls myself a vegetarian in some pathetic attempt to give my views some kind of legitimacy.”

“Matthew 6:24 tells us that we cannot serve two masters, and this is no different for those attempting to serve religious and political/social agendas. One cannot claim to be a Christian by citing only the half of the Bible that is convenient to one’s political and social agenda. One cannot claim to be a Christian and wink as Christianity and Christ are bashed. One cannot claim to defend women and human rights and wink when Chinese or Islamic women are brutalized through forced abortions or honor killings simply because those victims are not one’s preferred political flavor.”

“Some might be tempted to call the Christian Left hypocrites in light of their inconsistencies and obvious selective outrage cited above, but to do so would be to underestimate this group. I propose the alternative assessment that there is nothing inconsistent or hypocritical about these contradictions and selective causes once one accepts that the so-called Religious Left has always proclaimed their faith aloud for all to see, and that faith is promoting the Left’s agenda with a crucifix in one hand and Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals in the other. A simple study of history will show that Alinsky, the hero of all community organizers and those who love them, used religion to promote socialism and Marxism, declared that he favored hell over Heaven, and dedicated his work to Lucifer. Sure sounds like Christianity, doesn’t it?”

The fast of he matter is that the “Christian” left support euthanasiaabortion (partial birth abortion and post birth abortion) and want to rewrite the Constitution of the United States to give them special status as a minority groups and allow them to legally marry.

How then does it have weeds?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.'”

Any Christian who considers oneself redeemed by the Atonement of Jesus Christ on Calvary yet supports the “Christian Left” and their platform is only deceiving themselves.

  • Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
    (2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV)

A question and issue that constantly comes up is if Jesus was a pacifist. According to Webster’s dictionary, a pacifist is someone who is opposed to violence, especially war, for any purpose, often accompanied by the refusal to bear arms by reason of conscience or religious conviction.

I am not God, so I cannot judge them. However, their fruits judge them. I doubt anyone in this movement truly knows Jesus Christ.

However, it’s not to late. It is written, “if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV)

We need to sincerely repent, pray and turn to God with all our hearts. This may be our final warning. Time is getting very short.

Mankind Was Created in the Image of God

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Out of all of God’s creation, only mankind was created in the image of God. But was does it mean to be created in the image of God?

The Hebrew word for “image” used in Genesis 1:26 is tselem (צֶלֶם), Strong’s H6754. The usage of this word suggests that man is made in the likeness or resemblance of God.

God clearly does not have a body of flesh and bones. Yeshua said, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24 KJV).

In the Book of Revelation, John wrote, “And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold. And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God” (Revelation 4:2-5 KJV).

Certain groups, notably the Mormons, have committed the error of saying that God the Father has a body, and have thus become anthropomorphites, people who say that God has a human form.

This form of doctrinal decay has also set in among certain segments of American Evangelicalism, most notably in the Pentecostal Word Faith movement. Many Evangelicals have (temporarily or permanently) bought into the idea that the Father has a body.

Anthropomorphites argue that man is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26–27) and point to verses that refer to the strong right arm of God, the eyes of God, and so forth.

Tatian the Syrian said, “Our God has no introduction in time. He alone is without beginning, and is himself the beginning of all things. God is a spirit, not attending upon matter, but the maker of material spirits and of the appearances which are in matter. He is invisible, being himself the Father of both sensible and invisible things.”

The Bible is clear that mankind, unlike the rest of creation,  is made in the image of God. Furthermore, the Bible repeats this truth after sin enters the world, which means even though sin has stained and marred us, we remain God’s image bearers.

Part of being made in God’s image is that Adam had the capacity to make free choices. Although he was given a righteous nature, Adam made an evil choice to rebel against his Creator. In so doing, Adam marred the image of God within himself, and he passed that damaged likeness on to all his descendants (Romans 5:12). Today, we still bear the image of God (James 3:9), but we also bear the scars of sin. Mentally, morally, socially, and physically, we show the effects of sin.

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned — for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law.
(Romans 5:12-13 ESV)

For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
(James 3:7-10 ESV)

The Apostle Paul wrote, “Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all” (Colossians 3:9-11 KJV).

John Calvin wrote the following comments on Colossians 3:10:

“We are renewed after the image of God. Hence, too we learn, on the one hand, what is the end of our regeneration, that is, that we may be made like God, and that His glory may shine forth in us; and, on the other hand, what is the image of God, of which mention is made by Moses in Genesis 9:6, the rectitude and integrity of the whole soul, so that man reflects, like a mirror, the wisdom, righteousness, and goodness of God. He speaks somewhat differently in the Epistle to the Ephesians, but the meaning is the same. Paul, at the same time, teaches, that there is nothing more excellent at which the Colossians can aspire, inasmuch as this is our highest perfection and blessedness to bear the image of God.”

What John Calvin is saying is that to image God is to “mirror” His invisible attributes to the world, somewhat like Moses, who radiated the glory of God after being in God’s presence. Therefore we are not to reflect Adam, the culture or even ourselves to the world. Rather God has bestowed upon us the amazing ability and awesome responsibility to be His mirrors on the earth, reflecting His goodness and glory to all for His glory and our joy. All persons are God’s image in a basic sense, but Christians image Him more than non-Christians and mature Christians do so even more.

God formed man from the dust and gave him life by sharing His own breath (Genesis 2:7). Accordingly, man is unique among all God’s creations, having both a material body and an immaterial soul/spirit.

The good news is that when God redeems an individual, He begins to restore the original image of God, creating a “new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:24). That redemption is only available by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior from the sin that separates us from God (Ephesians 2:8-9). Through Christ, we are made new creations in the likeness of God (2 Corinthians 5:17).

The image of God is generally held to mean that people contain within their nature elements that reflect God’s nature: compassion, reason, love, hate, patience, kindness, self-awareness, etc. Man was made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26). Though we have a physical image, it does not mean that God has one. Rather, God is spirit (John 4:24), not flesh and bones (Luke 24:39).

Yeshua alone has imaged God perfectly. Many New Testament Scriptures, and even Yeshua Himself, declare this.

In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
(2 Corinthians 4:4 ESV)

May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things were created through him and for him.

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me.

Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

Yeshua told is how we can best mirror the image of God and the radiance of His Glory as Moses did. Yeshua said, “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:13-16 ESV).

Perpetual Amnesia

What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has been already in the ages before us. There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of later things yet to be among those who come after.
(Ecclesiastes 1:9-11 ESV)

Men’s hearts and their corruptions are the same now as in former times; their desires, and pursuits, and complaints, still the same. How many things and people in history were thought to be very great? Yet today, there is no remembrance of them anymore.

George Santayana (December 16, 1863 – September 26, 1952) was a philosopher, essayist, poet, and novelist. He is probably best known for his quotation that states, “Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Many of mankind’s greatest achievements are displayed in the great monuments that out ancestors built in the past. The Great Sphinx, the pyramids of Egypt, the zygorats of Mesopotamia, the Aztec temples of Mexico, Stonehenge, Easter Island, Machu Picchu and the Nasca Lines in Peru, Petra in Jordan, Greek temples and Roman monuments, to name just a few. Yet today, we cannot even determine how many of these structures were built or what their purposes were. Our modern cranes and industrial equipment could not lift or move many of the stones used to build these monuments, yet ancient civilizations around the world seems to have built them with ease. The stones on some of these monuments are cut so precisely that modern machine shops cannot match the precision of our ancestors. The Great Pyramid of Giza has a footprint of is over thirteen acres. The accuracy of the pyramid’s workmanship is such that the four sides of the base have an average error of only 58 millimetres in length. The base is horizontal and flat to within ±15 mm. The sides of the square base are closely aligned to the four cardinal compass points (within 4 minutes of arc) based on true north, not magnetic north, and the finished base was squared to a mean corner error of only 12 seconds of arc. The completed design dimensions, as suggested by Egyptologist Sir Flinders Petrie’s survey and subsequent studies, are estimated to have originally been 280 cubits high by 440 cubits long at each of the four sides of its base. The ratio of the perimeter to height of 1760/280 cubits equates to 2π to an accuracy of better than 0.05% (corresponding to the well-known approximation of π as 22/7). Some Egyptologists consider this to have been the result of deliberate design proportion. One Egyptologist wrote, “We can conclude that although the ancient Egyptians could not precisely define the value of π, in practice they used it”.

Brain surgery is perhaps the oldest of the practiced medical arts. There is ample evidence of brain surgery dating back to the Neolithic (late Stone Age) period. Unearthed remains of successful brain operations, as well as surgical implements, were found in France, at one of Europe’s noted archaeological sites. And, the success rate was remarkable, even circa 7,000 B.C. But, pre-historic evidence of brain surgery was not limited to Europe. Pre-Incan civilization used brain surgery as an extensive practice as early as 2,000 B.C. In Paracas, Peru, a desert strip south of Lima, archaeological evidence indicates that brain surgery was used extensively. Here, too, an inordinate success rate was noted as patients were restored to health. The treatment was used for mental illnesses, epilepsy, headaches, organic diseases, osteomylitis, as well as head injuries.

Mankind seems to be a species with perpetual amnesia. How many of our new inventions are truly new? None. It has been already in the ages before us. There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of later things yet to be among those who come after. There is evidence of electricity, flight, plumbing and many other modern technologies in antiquity. If the world lasts long enough, someday someone will invent writing, microwave ovens, electric guitars, and computers and software.

If we would be entertained with new things, we must acquaint ourselves with the things of God, get a new nature; then old things pass away, and all things become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). In heaven all is new (Revelation 21:5), all new at first, wholly unlike the present state of things, a new world indeed (Luke 20:35), and all new to eternity, always fresh, always flourishing. This consideration should make the redeemed welcome our natural deaths, not fear death. Death is part of life, perhaps death could be called the climax of our lives, assuming our souls are redeemed and we have accepted Yeshua as our Messiah and Savior. From the moment we are born, our bodies begin to die. In this world there is nothing but the same over and over again, and we can expect nothing from it more or better than we have already had.

George Santayana’s quote is good, whereas King Solomon’s is brilliant. Solomon knew we were doomed to repeat our past and always reinvent the wheel, George Santayana seemed to think we could do something to change this fact. The only thing we can do to change anything is to prepare for eternity. There are only two destinations, and our purpose in life is to choose our final destination. Not making a choice is a choice, and the consequences of that choice is eternal death and damnation.

Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says, “In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
